St. John the Baptist Parish - Over a hundred volunteers including residents, community organizations, government agencies, churches, schools and businesses participated in the Spring Clean Sweep event on Saturday, April 21, 2018. The event is organized bi-annually by St. John the Baptist Parish Officials and the “Keep St. John Beautiful” (KSB) Committee to promote community beautification.
Parish leaders and the KSB Committee Chairman Za Maurin welcomed volunteers on Saturday as they gathered at the Hwy. 51 Park to kick off the cleanup and gather supplies. All participants received garbage bags, gloves, t-shirts, masks and trash clamps in support of the efforts.
The Clean Sweep committee assigned volunteers to major thoroughfares throughout the parish if they hadn’t already chosen an area for cleaning. More than 50 trash bags were picked up and volunteers returned to the Park after for jambalaya and drinks to celebrate a successful cleanup. Raising Canes of LaPlace provided sweet tea and lemonade for the event.
In addition to litter abatement, residents are reminded to only allow rain to go down the storm drain. Don't sweep or dump leaves, grass clippings, litter, motor oil or anything else into the street, or your storm drain. Leaves, grass and debris clogs culverts and storm drains causing flooding.
For additional anti-littering tips and efforts, please visit the “Keep America Beautiful” website at www.kab.org. The Parish recycle yard is open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday – Saturday and is located at 1801 W. Airline Hwy, LaPlace. Recycle bins are also located at: the Westbank Recreational Complex Edgard Courthouse, Garyville Service Center, Health and Human Services, St. Andrews Fire Station and Pleasure Bend Fire Station. More information regarding the Fall Clean Sweep will be released once finalized.
