St. John the Baptist Parish - The special KCS Holiday train will be in LaPlace, this Friday, November 29, 2019, starting at 4:00 pm. The tour of the train is FREE, and you don’t have to purchase tickets. The Holiday Express will be stationed at the railroad crossing between Hemlock and Elm Street along Parish Road in LaPlace.
Parking will take place in the new Government Complex parking lot at 1811 West Airline Highway and the entrance/exit to the event will be near the rear of the Sheriff’s Office next to the Parish recycle yard. Around 3:00 pm, Percy Hebert Road from Walgreens to Parish Road will be closed. A map with more information can be found here.
The six-car train with Santa Claus and his elves is stopping in 22 communities in six states over a 26-day period. Led by the KCS' Southern Belle business train, the Holiday Express includes a smiling tank car "Rudy"; a flatcar carrying Santa's sleigh, reindeer and a miniature village; a gingerbread boxcar; the elves' workshop; the reindeer stable; and a little red caboose.
The Holiday Express was built on the tradition of the Santa Train, which ran on a segment of the network purchased by KCS in 1997. In 2000, KCS employees noticed that the Santa Train was the only Christmas some kids had, and that some did not even have essential items like coats, hats and gloves. KCS employees were so touched that they committed to elevating the project. This year, a total of $172,500 in gift cards will be distributed to Salvation Army stops along the route.
